Derbyshire sign Mohammad Abbas

Derbyshire have signed Pakistan seamer, Mohammad Abbas, on a two-year contract.  

Abbas, 35, has claimed more than 830 first-class wickets at an average of little over 20, with 100 of those dismissals coming in Test cricket.

He has represented Leicestershire, Hampshire and Nottinghamshire in the County Championship, taking 50 or more red ball wickets in an English season three times.

A skilful and accurate bowler, Abbas’ best Test figures of 6-54 came in December 2024, when he tormented the South Africa top and middle order at Centurion.

In signing for Derbyshire, Abbas reunites with Head of Cricket, Mickey Arthur, the coach who gave him his Test debut against West Indies in 2017.

Speaking about the signing, Arthur said: “This is a statement signing for us, we’ve beaten a number of Division One counties to sign one of the finest red ball bowlers around and we’re absolutely delighted to have Mohammad on board for 2026 and 2027.

“He’s an exceptional bowler, he bowls maidens, builds pressure and his wickets come at a really impressive average. However, it’s not just his ability which will be huge for us, his experience is going to be massive for our young players to learn from.”
